The Breed
Discover the Maine Coon — one of the most beloved and distinctive cat breeds in the world.
European Maine Coons
Our program focuses on European Maine Coon lines. These cats are still true Maine Coons and are judged against the same core breed principles: a large rectangular body, substantial bone, a square muzzle, strong chin, tufted ears, and a shaggy, weather-resistant coat. Many European programs intentionally preserve a more dramatic, natural "working cat" look while keeping the breed's gentle and social temperament.
In practice, this often means a very expressive head shape, strong muzzle structure, taller ears with visible lynx tips, and a robust overall frame. At the same time, the personality people love in Maine Coons remains the same: affectionate, playful, intelligent, and family-oriented.
The European vs American Maine Coon
The difference is usually about style and breeding emphasis, not about one being "better." Both European and American lines can produce exceptional, healthy, breed-standard Maine Coons. You will also see overlap, and many pedigrees include cats from both sides.
- European lines: Often selected for a more pronounced, "wild" expression with stronger muzzle definition, taller ear set/tufts, and a very substantial frame.
- American lines: Often selected for a softer, classic look with balanced head features, while still retaining hallmark Maine Coon traits like size, coat texture, and square muzzle.
- Temperament: In both types, Maine Coons are typically known for being gentle, social, playful, and highly people-oriented.
- Important: Health testing, ethical breeding, and socialization matter more than geography alone when choosing the right kitten.
